You probably already know this, but I’m going to state the obvious anyway. If you’re looking for a job, the hiring process is broken.
Want to know a sad not-so-secret secret? The hiring process has been breaking down for the last two decades. In 2016, there was a infamous article on Medium titled, F*** You, I Quit — Hiring Is Broken.
In this article, Sahat Yalkabov wrote, “Today’s recruiting process is designed for one thing only, keep out the bad apples. Companies are more worried about making a hiring mistake than landing a rock star employee.
Companies need talent, a person has talent, and there’s a recruiter-driven, bureaucratic mass in the middle preventing a happy match. In short, they are clueless about talent acquisition.
Let’s take a look at all the ways applying for a job is a hot mess.
✓Over-Reliance on Automated Systems
✓Generic Job Descriptions
✓Many job listings are fake.
Ready for things to get better? They won’t.
✓Lack of Human Interaction
✓Inconsistent Feedback
✓Skills vs. Experience Mismatch
✓Overemphasis on Formal Education
✓Too Many Interview Rounds
Take a deep breath. We have two more to go.
✓Lengthy Time to Hire
Look. None of this should be a surprise to you. If you have a job, you are probably familiar with the periphery (a gift from my Thesaurus) of the hiring process.
It’s bad. It’s depressing. It can’t be fixed. But you can take control of your future.
Take control of your life and go create your own job. Creating your own job is the only way to control the process of determining your future!
Let’s clear something up, creating your own job is NOT about entrepreneurship!
Going into business for yourself is a way to create your own employment, but that is not the premise of this book. Besides, the “quit your 9-to-5” angle has been overplayed. Instead, I am proposing that you are still going to be employed with a company, but on your terms.
You don’t even have to change companies.
That’s the beauty of creating your own job. You can choose who you want to work for, whether it’s your current employer or a new company.
Want someone’s opinion who is smarter than me on this subject (as if)? Harvard Economics professor Larry Summers once said, “Harvard undergraduates believe that inventing a job is better than finding a job.”
There are really two sets of jobs available for job seekers. The first set of jobs can be found on company websites, LinkedIn, or through a recruiter.
The second set of jobs don’t actually exist yet. That’s because they aren’t roles waiting to be filled, they are opportunities that have yet to be created.
Think about it and hit me up if you would like some help!
